The stay in the Chinese city of Shenzhen was not for a long time. I spent three days there and enjoyed the hospitality of this city and its citizens. During the visit, I got the opportunity to visit some Chinese enterprises in the city.
At the invitation of the Consulate General of China in Lahore, I as a member of an 8-member delegation from leading media and think tanks of Punjab, Pakistan visited Beijing and Shenzhen, China from May 24 to May 30.
Basically, the visit was of a study nature. When I reached Huawei, a well-known company in China, a Chinese mister addressed me as soon as I sat down, “you Pakistanis should accept our congratulations.” I started looking at him with questioning eyes, “why are you congratulating us?” He told me that Huawei is following a global plan to bring out the best talents in the field of ICT all over the world.
For this purpose Huawei has engaged various educational institutions through out the world. Also, it has organized the Huawei ICT Competition 2022-23. The mister noted that the Huawei ICT competition aims to provide a platform for international college students to compete and communicate with each other in ICT.
“We are congratulating you because Pakistani students have won prizes in this competition by showing exceptional performance,” he explained. As a Pakistani I was very happy and expressed my desire to know more about this competition.
Elaborating on our interest, our host said that this was Huawei's seventh competition of its kind. Students from 2,000 universities from 74 countries participated in the preliminary competition before participating in the final. Then 146 teams from 36 countries were selected for the finals.
The competition was very tough. Despite this, Pakistani students secured the second and third positions in the network track, also they won the third prize in the innovation track category. It was a great success.
Huawei is involved in many other fields in addition to the talent hunt competitions for the students in Pakistan, not to mention there is a long description of Huawei's services in the national life of Pakistan. I believed that companies like Huawei that are active in training the youth should be encouraged more in Pakistan so that Pakistani youth can benefit from these companies.
